I absolutely loved this sweet little activity. We had just begun our earth studies and learned how the earth was formed 4.6 billion years ago from dust, gas and rock. We talked about how everything on Earth, including us, came from the same "stuff". We talked about how we are connected to the rocks, the trees, the animals, to every human being and how we are all connected in this vast web of life. As a hands on way to demonstrate this I wanted to make a mobile that we could hang up.

We are all Stardust Mobile

What you'll need:

  • a laminated photo of your family
  • leaves, feathers, flowers, pinecones, sticks, shells etc.
  • polymer clay or any other type of clay
  • a wooden hoop
  • string
  • decorative yarn or lace or ribbon

What to do:

  1. Go on a nature walk and collect treasures. Ask your child to choose a variety of things but don't tell them why.
  2. make some polymer clay stars
  3. Grab your laminated photo and cut a hole in the top of it so that you can put a string through
  4. Grab your hoop and make an X shape out of strong over the top so that there is a centre point for your picture to hang from and also a place for you to attach string so that you can hang it up.
  5. Next begin decorating your hoop with all of your found treasures along with the stars and ribbon.
  6. Tell your child that everything you see here is connected and that all the things they collected along with themselves are all made up of the same stuff that we all come from stardust!
