Making 2 Kinds of Edible Trilobites
When we began learning about fossils it triggered Nixie's curiosity and she wanted to learn about all extinct animals so we began a journey through our Earth's timeline. We loved learning about the Cambrian period and she was really fascinated by Trilobites so we made some edible treats.
Trilobite Buns
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup warm (not hot) water
- 1 package of active dry yeast (or 2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 3 cups flour
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tbsp butter
Directions:
- Activate the yeast. Mix the yeast, sugar and water in a small bowl. Let it set for a few minutes until it begins to bubble and froth.
- In a large bowl, whisk the flour and salt together.
- Pour the melted butter, the milk, and the yeast mixture into the large bowl on top of the flour/salt mixture and stir to combine.
- Dump the dough onto a lightly floured surface and show your child how to knead it. Allow them to knead it well for several minutes. (add tiny amounts of milk if dough is too dry)
- Put the kneaded dough into a large, clean bowl. Drizzle with a little melted butter and cover with a dry towel and let it rise for 60 minutes.
- After 60 minutes, "punch" the dough down and then divide into 6 pieces. shape into trilobites placing it onto a cookie sheet.
- cover the cookie sheet with a damp towel. preheat oven to 205c. Leave the covered trilobites to rise for another 20-25 minutes
- Carefully use a knife to make impressions on the trilobites, slashing lines and details. Add raisins for eyes.
- Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.
Trilobite Sugar Cookies
These were another really simple treat which the kids loved! I used Loving It Vegans Sugar Cookie Recipe and made some cuts into them so that they would look like little trilobites and then I dipped them into melted chocolate and just added some eyes!
