Make Your Own Soy Candles
We love making candles in our house, there's something extra cosy about making them from scratch and then lighting them up. I started making them a couple of years ago after seeing a post by Wild Wattle Folk over on Instagram sharing her process and ever since then we can't stop making them. If you want some more beautiful ideas she's created some free ebooks over at her website for everyone to enjoy, she's been a huge inspiration to us and I'm sure she will be to you as well!
There are so many different ways to make candles. we love using clay and making little bowls out of them and then just adding the wax to them but you could also just use little jars and paint them to make them a little more special. We tend to make a lot of heart themed candles and once Nixie even made a dinosaur candle and added fossils and jaw bones into it. Whatever you are studying in the moment you can always make a candle which fits the theme! Below I've made a list of the materials we use and have also included links. (I don't receive anything from sharing these links, I just know how helpful it can be for others!).
Materials:
- Air Dry Clay (if using to make bowls first)
- Acrylic Paint
- Soy Wax
- Candle Wicks & Wick stickers
- Double Boiler
- Chop sticks or wooden lolly sticks or something similar (to hold wick in place)
- essential oils if using
Instructions
- Take your container which you plan to to turn into a candle and fill it up with approximately double the amount of wax.
- now place your wax into the double boiler and wait for it to melt.
- If I'm using essential oils I add it in after the wax has melted.
- While waiting for wax to melt, add the wick sticker to the centre of your bowl along with your wick.
- Once was is melted just pour it into your bowls and wait for it to set. Place your lolly sticks on either side of the wick to keep it in place until it has set.
- Now just light it up and enjoy it!
These latest candles we just made on a whim as I had discovered some unfinished bowls in the cupboard. While I melted the wax Both Forrest and Nixie painted them. It was Forrest's first time painting a candle and I love the colours he chose!
